Ara Institute

Campus Master Plan

Ara required a master plan for its 70,000 m2 campus in Central Christchurch. The plan needed to respond to the needs of all types of modern learners and the facilities across all of the Ara campuses. The new and repurposed facilities had been designed to reflect the shift towards more flexible learning, blended learning options and integrated online delivery.

Align collaborated with a diverse range of stakeholders to produce master plans, sketches, concepts and drawings. We communicated and collaborated frequently with others to maintain the momentum of the multiple workstreams. The workstreams involved developing and detailing the designs that passed through to the tender and onsite contract management stages.

Three stages were built and are now enjoyed by staff, students and visitors alike. The large North Green space contains lawns, a basketball court, paths, stage areas, seats and planting to support campus life. The Memorial Garden features art and a reflective space as a tribute to the past. The Kahukura building is sophisticated and unique, setting off the beautiful new building fronting within its environment. The new Ara Memorial Garden, designed by Align, won the the Firth National Small Project Design Award at the 2018 NZILA Conference.

Our communication and collboration skills were critical in moving the developed and detailed design on to tender and onsite contract management stages fore the Ara Campus Master Plan.
