Challenge

The New Brighton Business and Landowners Association wished to develop a Master Plan for New Brighton and to redesign the suburban and surrounding landscapes post the Canterbury earthquakes.

Approach

The project involved conceptual development, circulation design, movement and transport, and local and regional research. To progress this work, Align worked alongside business and landowner groups and undertook extensive public and private consultation, including presentations to community groups and Council.

Outcomes

The Master plan focused on the coastal area of New Brighton, with conceptual development taking place, exploring outdoor pools and recreation, native planting with strengthened waterfront connections and mixed- use development.

The New Brighton Master Planning project gained strong support from a range of stakeholders and was acknowledged by the Christchurch Mayor, Lianne Dalziel, and Prime Minister, John Key.
